Gift-giving tips for robots
Check the return window before you buy
Holiday return windows differ by store, and some start on the delivery date, not on the day the gift is opened. Read the store's return policy on its own site before checkout, and keep the box and packing until the robot has had a few weeks of use.
Ask for a gift receipt
A gift receipt lets the recipient exchange or return without seeing the price. Maker stores don't always offer one at checkout; if not, keep the order email so you can start a return for them.
For a pool robot, check the pool first
Look up the pool's length or area, its shape, and whether it is in-ground or above-ground, then compare that with the maker's pool-size rating. Wall and waterline cleaning only helps if the pool has walls the robot is built for. Most pools are closed in winter, so the robot may wait until spring.
For a vacuum, think about the home layout
Count the floors, door sills, rugs and stairs. A robot works one floor at a time, so a multi-story home may mean carrying it or buying two. A dock that empties the bin or washes the mop needs floor space near an outlet.
For a mower, it is a spring gift
Check the lawn size against the mower's rated area, plus slopes and narrow passages. Setup needs dry grass and some time, so plan it for when the lawn starts growing.
For a window robot, measure the glass
Window robots need large, flat panes and a safety tether. Small, divided or top-opening windows are a poor fit, and corners usually still need a cloth.
