Best robot mower for St. Augustine grass
Our verdict
Buy the Segway Navimow X430 ($2,499 on navimow.com, seen Nov 2, 2026) if you can find it in stock. It cuts up to 4 inches, has all-wheel drive, and it is the mower St. Augustine owners on Reddit praise most for traction and clean turns. If it is sold out, the Navimow X330 ($2,299, in stock when we checked) also reaches 4 inches. The trap in this category is cut height: UF/IFAS recommends 3.5 to 4 inches for Floratam and other standard St. Augustine, and several popular mowers stop at 2.7 or 2.8 inches, including the in-stock Standard Version of the Mammotion LUBA 3 AWD.
Which one should you buy?

1Best overall for St. Augustine
Segway Navimow X430
Best for: Standard St. Augustine (Floratam, BitterBlue, Palmetto) on lawns up to about 1 acre, including sloped yards
$2,499 at navimow.com, seen Nov 2, 2026Sold out on navimow.com when we checked; one owner bought from Home Depot for its return policy, so check price there too
The best match we found between what St. Augustine needs and what a mower can do. Segway lists a 0.75 to 4 inch cutting height, all-wheel drive and an 84% slope rating for the X4 series, and owners in Central Florida, Houston and The Woodlands describe it holding traction on thick St. Augustine where earlier mowers bogged down. Its weak spots are size and stock. Owners call it huge for tight side yards, and navimow.com showed both X4 sizes sold out on Nov 2, 2026.

- Your mowing area is up to 1 acre (the X450 covers 1.5 acres for $2,999)
Skip it if
- Your yard is mostly narrow passages and small beds
- You need it this week and it is still sold out

2Best in stock right now
Segway Navimow X330
Best for: Standard St. Augustine on up to 1 acre when the X430 is sold out
$2,299 at navimow.com, seen Nov 2, 2026In stock on navimow.com when we checked
The X3 series lists a 2 to 4 inch cutting height on every model, so it covers the whole UF/IFAS range for standard St. Augustine, and the X330 was in stock at $2,299 on Nov 2, 2026. It is the older platform. Segway lists a 50% slope rating and 25% at the boundary, well below the X4's claim, so it suits flatter Florida lots better than hilly ones. Owner threads specific to the X3 on St. Augustine were thin when we checked, so we lean on the spec sheet here.
Buy it if
- Your lawn is mostly flat
- You want a 4 inch mower you can order today
- You need 1.5 acres (the X350 is $2,799, also in stock when we checked)
Skip it if
- Your yard has steep banks or slopes near the edges
- You want a dwarf variety cut below 2 inches

What owners say
Owner reports on the X3 series cutting St. Augustine were thin when we checked; this pick rests on Segway's published 2 to 4 inch cutting height.

3Best for steep yards (High Version only)
Mammotion LUBA 3 AWD (High Version)
Best for: Sloped St. Augustine lawns, if you can get the High Version
$2,799 at us.mammotion.com, seen Nov 2, 2026LUBA 3 AWD 3000 (0.75 acre); the High Version showed sold out in every size when we checked. The 1500 is $2,399 and the 5000 is $3,299
Mammotion sells the LUBA 3 AWD in two decks, and for St. Augustine the choice matters more than the acreage. The Standard Version cuts 1.0 to 2.7 inches, too short for Floratam in summer. The High Version cuts 2.2 to 4.0 inches. Mammotion lists an 80% slope rating, the best on this page after the X4. On Nov 2, 2026, every High Version size showed sold out on us.mammotion.com while the Standard 3000 was in stock, so check the variant before you pay.
Buy it if
- Your lawn has real slopes
- You can get the High Version (2.2 to 4.0 inches)
Skip it if
- The only version in stock is the Standard (1.0 to 2.7 inches)
- Shady areas under trees already struggle; one owner says an older LUBA's turns wore those spots bare

4Best for big lots with dealer support
Husqvarna Automower 440 iQ
Best for: Lawns up to 2 acres where you want a local dealer to install and service it
$4,299.99 at husqvarna.com, seen Nov 2, 2026Husqvarna MSRP; shown out of stock online when we checked, so ask a dealer
Husqvarna lists a 1 to 4 inch cutting height and 2 acres of coverage (1 acre if the lawn is irregular), with a choice of virtual or physical boundary. It costs far more than the Navimow, and its 15% boundary slope rating is low, so it suits big, flat lots. The case for it is service. Husqvarna sells through dealers, and an older Husqvarna, the 430XH, has positive St. Augustine reports from Fort Lauderdale owners. It showed out of stock online on Nov 2, 2026; the smaller 420 iQ (1 acre, $3,299.99 MSRP) has the same 4 inch top height.
Buy it if
- Your lawn is large and mostly flat
- You want a dealer to set it up and handle repairs
Skip it if
- Your yard slopes near the edges
- You can't find a dealer with stock
Key specs
| Cutting height (Husqvarna) | 1 to 4 in |
|---|---|
| Area (company claim) | 2 acres, 1 acre if irregular |
| Boundary | Virtual or physical wire |
| Slope at boundary (company claim) | 15% |

What owners say
Praise: Fort Lauderdale owners say the older 430XH did well on St. Augustine. Complaints: one owner says an Automower tore up turf. Reports cover the older model, not the 440 iQ.
Praise
- Fort Lauderdale owners report the older Husqvarna 430XH did well on St. Augustine
Complaints

Short answer: the Segway Navimow X430 ($2,499) is the best robot mower for St. Augustine grass, because it cuts up to 4 inches and St. Augustine owners report the best traction with it. It was sold out on navimow.com on Nov 2, 2026, so the in-stock Navimow X330 ($2,299, 2 to 4 inches) is the practical pick today. Whatever you buy, check the top cutting height first.
How high should you mow St. Augustine grass?
Higher than most robot mowers are built for. These are the UF/IFAS recommendations, from its St. Augustinegrass publication and homeowner guide (read Nov 2, 2026):
| St. Augustine type | Examples | UF/IFAS mowing height | Robot mowers on this page that reach it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard | Floratam, BitterBlue, Classic | 3.5 to 4 in | Navimow X430/X450, Navimow X330/X350, LUBA 3 AWD High Version, Husqvarna 440 iQ and 420 iQ |
| Palmetto | Palmetto | 3 to 4 in | Same as above |
| Dwarf | Captiva, Delmar, Seville | 2 to 2.5 in | All of the above, plus most mowers that stop near 2.7 in |
Floratam is the most common type in Florida yards, and UF/IFAS notes it has poor shade tolerance. If yours is thin under trees, mowing short makes that worse. Raising the height in summer heat is what owners on r/roboticLawnmowers do too; one in The Woodlands, TX says he wants 3.5 inches minimum in summer and closer to 4.
Which robot mowers can't cut St. Augustine high enough?
Two that come up often stop short of 3.5 inches, per their makers' own US pages (read Nov 2, 2026):
- Mammotion LUBA 3 AWD, Standard Version: 1.0 to 2.7 inches. This was the version in stock on us.mammotion.com when we checked, so it is the easy one to buy by mistake.
- Husqvarna Automower 435 iQ AWD: 1.2 to 2.8 inches, even though it is Husqvarna's slope specialist.
Both are fine for a dwarf variety kept at 2 to 2.5 inches. For Floratam, skip them. Also be wary of the number on the dial: an owner in this X430 thread says an earlier mower set to 3.5 inches seemed to cut closer to 3. A mower with headroom above your target height is safer than one at its limit.
Why does traction matter so much on St. Augustine?
St. Augustine is a coarse, thick grass, and lighter mowers can bog down or spin, especially at grass-to-concrete edges and after rain. The most detailed owner report we found, from a Central Florida owner who has tried mowers for 4 years, says traction was the main problem with earlier models and that the X430's all-wheel drive and articulated deck fixed it. The flip side is turning. Owners of older LUBA models say zero-point turns tore up turf over time, worst in shady patches, and one owner says the same of an older Automower. If part of your lawn is already thin, favor a mower that turns gradually.
How often does a robot need to mow St. Augustine in summer?
Often. UF/IFAS advises removing no more than a third of the leaf blade per mowing, which at a 4 inch setting means cutting before the grass passes about 6 inches. In a Florida summer that is a short window. One Florida owner says he runs his robot every 4 days and never bags; the clippings break down fast. Another, in Houston, still runs a push mower once a month to even out the cut. Neither approach is required, but plan on a frequent schedule, not a weekly one.
Is a robot mower worth it for a Florida lawn?
It depends on what you pay for mowing now. Put the mower's price and your current lawn service bill into the buy vs subscribe calculator to see the break-even. A robot handles mowing only; edging and fertilizing are still on you. If you are comparing brands rather than grass types, start with the robot mower hub.
Buying a robot mower as a holiday gift?
Check stock and the return window before you wrap it. Two of the four picks here showed sold out or out of stock online on Nov 2, 2026, and stock can change before the holidays. An X430 owner said he would buy from Home Depot because of returns, so compare return policies, not just price. More ideas are in the 2026 robot gift guide.

Frequently asked questions
What height should a robot mower cut St. Augustine grass?
UF/IFAS recommends 3.5 to 4 inches for standard varieties like Floratam and BitterBlue, 3 to 4 inches for Palmetto, and 2 to 2.5 inches for dwarf varieties like Captiva, Delmar and Seville. Pick a mower whose top cutting height reaches your variety's range.
Can a robot mower handle thick St. Augustine grass?
Some can. Owners on Reddit report the Segway Navimow X430 holding traction on thick St. Augustine in Florida and Texas, and older Husqvarna and LUBA models getting mixed reports, mainly about turns tearing turf. Cut height is the first filter; traction and turning are the second.
Is the Mammotion LUBA 3 AWD good for St. Augustine?
Only the High Version, which Mammotion lists at 2.2 to 4.0 inches. The Standard Version stops at 2.7 inches, which is below the UF/IFAS range for Floratam. On Nov 2, 2026, the High Version showed sold out in every size on us.mammotion.com.
How often should a robot mower run on St. Augustine in summer?
Often enough that each cut removes no more than a third of the blade, which UF/IFAS recommends. At a 4 inch setting that means cutting before the grass passes about 6 inches. One Florida owner runs a robot every 4 days in summer.
